BWRAF — Essential Equipment Checks Before Scuba Diving

A safe dive is the first priority of every dive operation. Ensuring that a diver has an enjoyable experience while maintaining the highest measures of safety are two aspects that go hand in hand for every underwater adventure.

To this end, amateur divers and pros alike are taught basic guidelines to follow before a dive.

What is BWRAF?

While it can easily be misread as barf, BWRAF is not even vaguely close to it.

It is an individual safety measure that is reaffirmed with the help of a dive partner who is experienced enough to supervise. If it is your first dive, this person can even be your instructor or supervisor.

What are the steps in BWRAF?

  • BCD

The first step is to ensure that the Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) is appropriately adjusted on your body and firmly grasp the tank.

Also check that all the primary functions are smooth, such as inflation and deflation of the device.

  • Weights

While seemingly trivial, weights help you descend underwater.

Quick removal of them is important to ascend at a moment’s notice.

It is always good to confirm that you and your dive buddy have worn the weight belt correctly.

  • Releases

Review the quickest and easiest methods to release each of your equipment. This will help you in case of any emergency, eg. entanglement.

Count your releases and buckles, ensuring that they are firmly closed.

Repeat the process after you enter the water, as the difference in buoyancy may affect the tightness.

Lastly, check that no hoses or buckles are loosely floating in the water as it might come in the way of the release process.

  • Air

Make sure that you have plenty of air for the entire dive.

Check whether your tank is turned on properly by breathing from the primary and secondary regulator while observing the gauge.

Also, smell the air. Odourless air is clean air.

  • Final Ok

Confirm that your fins are fitted well over your feet.

Apply a layer of defog liquid (even saliva works) into your scuba mask as it will keep your mask clear underwater. Make sure that all your accessories and tools like the dive computer and divelights are properly functioning.

Lastly, but very importantly, you ought to check that nothing dangles loosely from your body frame. This will prevent entanglements, help you dive easily and avoid damage to the gear as well as the marine life you will see.

Every dive institute believes in teaching these basic steps for the safety of the divers. They each have their own version, but they all include basic safety measures. Following these easy steps goes a long way in boosting your confidence, allowing you to enjoy a worry-free dive.

How Can You Remember BWRAF easily?

You can make it easier to remember BWRAF by replacing the words with a sentence so that you can associate them later.

PADI instructors normally use the acronym

  • Begin With Review And Friend.
  • Better With Rice And Fish
  • Bombay Women Really Are Friendly
  • Because We Really Aren’t Fish
