WOMB — Steps Taken to Preserve Marine Biodiversity

You would hate to be startled by a burglar and see him mess around with your house right in front of you, wouldn’t you?
One thing we should realise — for marine life, the sea is their home. Being a guest and enjoying beauty is a separate thing. Destroying it and intimidating them is a big no-no.

More than 2,00,000 known species live in the seas, and that’s just a fraction of the actual number discovered. The seas make up for approximately 90% of inhabitable space in this world.

Their role in the balance of ecosystems is undeniable.

What is WOMB?

WOMB is an acronym for the Welfare Of Marine Biodiversity. It is a subtle representation of the fact that Mother Nature nurtures us in her womb — the sea. After all, they even say that the first form of life on Earth came from the seas.

WOMB is a united initiative taken by us at West Coast Adventures to do everything we can with fellow humans to protect the marine biome.

Activities undertaken by WOMB are not limited, but include -

  • Conducting underwater and beach clean-ups with locals and volunteers.
  • Spreading awareness about the importance of marine life and its protection.
  • Conducting seminars to educate people about what we can do to protect the marine world.
  • Asking renowned people in the field of ecologic preservation to vouch and speak with us.

Why are Oceans and Marine Biodiversity important?

The abundant flora and fauna underwater play a significant role in the balance of the world’s economy and ecology.

Sea transport and trade greatly affect our infrastructure and the condition of the seas at large have an impact on the climate, in general.

Even if you are not a nature enthusiast, from a completely selfish point — seafood, minerals and a great deal of oxygen, all of these come from our oceans.

The oceans have provided us with what seems like an endless supply of boons. From medicine to valuable resources and even as a form of adventurous entertainment, we have never been let down. But in reality, these resources are limited and are being rapidly consumed, faster than they are renewed. Without them, we would have a really dull and monochromatic life, taking many more centuries to reach the level of cultural and social development we have reached today.

For that very reason, WOMB has been an activity that we have undertaken to preserve the seas.

Simple ways you can help protect marine diversity

You can always do your own bit to protect the seas. Introduce the following simple lifestyle changes for a better tomorrow. They are not difficult, but unitedly, they will have a great impact on the welfare of our planet.

  • Avoid using plastic objects like straws and cups as there is a good chance that they will find their way into the sea.
  • Eat seasonal seafood, avoiding species that are endangered or protected.
  • Follow safe and systematic garbage disposal processes, especially for chemicals and electronics.
  • Use eco-friendly cleaning agents and detergents or even make your own at home.
  • Maintain cleanliness as a tourist or a visitor to a beach.
  • Participate actively in initiatives taken by locals and nearby non-profit activities to clean and protect the oceans.
  • Follow safe and conservative practices when enjoying water sports like scuba diving, etc.

A WOMB activity has been previously held at Murdeshwar on the 16th November 2019, where a Clean Up Dive was held at a large scale. Dr Dipani Sutaria, an independent ecologist and a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group spoke largely about the preservation of marine biology with us.

We are looking forward to holding our next WOMB event at the earliest and seeing you all there. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to get the latest updates.
